How to Become an ASFA Judge

Becoming an ASFA judge is a multi-step process designed to ensure all judges possess deep knowledge of the rules, safety procedures, and sighthound running styles. Below is a simplified overview based on the ASFA Judges Licensing Process (JDG 06).

1

Apprentice Judging Eligibility

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must be in good standing with the American Sighthound Field Association (ASFA).
  • Must have a general knowledge of the coursing abilities of the breeds recognized by the ASFA.
  • Must be familiar with the ASFA's Running Rules and Field Procedures for Lure Field Trials and ALL related policies.
  • Must have participated in lure field trials for a minimum of three (3) consecutive years.
  • Must have served in some official field capacity at a minimum of ten (10) field trials.
2

Apprentice Judging Requirements

  • Download a judge's sheet blank form from the ASFA web site or ask the FTS for forms.
  • Must judge all courses for a breed with a minimum of three entries at three trials under three different licensed judges.
  • This must be repeated for five individual breeds.
  • Must score all courses on a judge's sheet, to be saved for submission when the requirements have been completed.
  • Must have each licensed judge fill out and sign a Judging Confirmation Statement (JDG 02).
  • The ASFA Judges License application, confirmation statements, judge's sheets and the application fee must be submitted within one year of the last date apprenticed. Prefer electronic/scanned submissions.
  • Must complete a test provided by the ASFA covering knowledge of the running rules and policies with a minimum score of 85% correct.
  • The application must be published twice.
3

Provisional Judging License Requirements (Breeds 1-3)

  • Must judge the performance of five or more hounds in a stake or seven hounds of a breed at three trials for that breed under three or more different all-breed licensed judges.
  • Present each judge with a Judging Confirmation Statement (JDG 02), which the licensed judge completes and returns to the provisional judge.
  • The provisional license covers all breeds but may not judge as a provisional for more than four breeds at a trial without prior approval from the Regional Director. A Provisional may judge Singles and any breeds for which they are regularly licensed in addition to the four provisional breeds without special permission.
  • All forms for a single breed must be dated within a three-year period.
  • When the above requirements have been met, the provisional judge notifies the Licensing Chair in writing, listing each assignment, accompanied by the confirmation forms for each judging assignment.
  • The application must be published twice.
4

All Breed License & Renewals

  • Once a judge is properly licensed for eight breeds, they may apply for an All Breed license.
  • The application must be published in the monthly judge report twice before the license can be granted.

Important Notes:

1. A judge must judge at least once in each two years, or the license will lapse.

2. Any judge who misses an assignment must send a letter of explanation to the chair of Judges' Licensing within two weeks of the date of the missed trials.
